Our coding classes usually have 5-10 students and the our classes teach the fundamentals of computer science to girls age 9-12. We are online right now and we use Zoom and Scratch-- a visual, block-based computer programming language.
It is very important for us to do everything we can to close the digital divide. That means that we try to make our classes as accessible as possible. Our classes are free, and the online coding language that we use is free too.
We have projects with instructions that students have access to if they want to ever look back on them. The instructor presents their screen and does the project along with everyone. Once the project is done, there can be time afterwards for students to add personal touches and explore more creativity.
With the lesson types and projects that we have, we have noticed the best impactful response with girls ages 9-12.
Although at Computing Minds we primarily want to focus on helping girls pursue computer science, we have let a few boys who were interested enroll in our classes.
Go to ComputingMinds.org/contact-us and send a message saying that you are interested in signing a girl age 9-12 up for coding classes. We are always forming more interest lists, and we will email you back regarding your message within 48 hours.
"I love coding class! My favorite project is the story project because I can make a story out of coding.
I like that Juliette always helps me when I don't know how to do something. She is very encouraging!"
